Arsenal U16s hold their own against determined Spurs

Whilst Arsenal U18s were locked in a tense 2-2 draw with their North London rivals yesterday, Steve Gatting’s under-16 side played out a classic 3-3 draw with Spurs at London Colney.

Steve Gatting welcomed back Nico Yennaris from an ankle injury, whilst Samir Carruthers returned following his trial at Aston Villa. Nigel Neita also came back into the fold after a two-week holiday, with the entire starting XI consisting of players who have featured in the u-18s this season.

subs: Chambers, Bihmoutine.

The U18s game was delayed by 15 minutes as Spurs had forgotten to pack their kit onto the coach and the under-16s had to borrow some of Arsenal’s footballs and cones to warm up with.

What Spurs lacked in equipment, they certainly made up for with desire, peppering Charlie Mann’s goal with attempts from all angles.

Despite going two goals down, the young Gunners held firm and pulled one back through substitute Samir Bihmoutine.

Tricky winger Jernade Meade then equalised, but Spurs responded to restore their one-goal cushion.

However, Arsenal’s hard work paid off when Zak Ansah, who scored a brace on his first start for the u-18s last week, drilled home a cool finish to level proceedings.

Gatting’s side are now preparing for the Atalanta Tournament and they will leave for Italy on Tuesday full of confidence.

Why is there only two substitutes on the bench? Surely there are more than 13 players able to turn up for the match.

Why’s Mann too old? Isn’t the Atalanta Tourney an U16 one?

Do you think Gatting will bring Aneke, Boateng and Aneke with him to Italy? I remember last year Wilshere was firing for the reserves but he got pulled back down for Atalanta. I’m guessing they will only be away for 10 days or so, leaving Afobe still in contention for the Youth Cup final.

Afobe is away with England so not going to Italy. Aneke is going to Italy. Boateng is too old he is a 1992.
