Arsenal strikers Benik Afobe and Luke Freeman marked their return from international duty with a brace in Arsenal u-18s 5-0 demolition of Portsmouth at London Colney this morning.
With the Premier Academy League title already wrapped up, Steve Bould once again opted to field some of the younger players at his disposal and his decision certainly paid dividends as the young Gunners took the South Coast side to the cleaners.
Roarie Deacon continued his excellent recent form by scoring his seventh goal of the season and from then on the hosts didn’t look back, with Afobe making it 2-0 ten minutes before the break.
Luke Freeman then hit a 21 minute brace after the break to kill the game as a contest and then Afobe added further gloss to the victory with his second of the game on 84 minutes. It was a comfortable victory and Wojciech Szczesny in the Arsenal goal was hardly tested.
The young Gunners have now wrapped up 60 points in Premier Academy League Group A and their reward is a place in the national semi-finals in May. The draw for these fixtures has now been made and is as follows:
Sunderland v Tottenham/Aston Villa/Leicester
Manchester City v Arsenal
Ties to be played 16th May, 11am kick off
Winner Game 1 v Winner Game 2
23rd May, 11am kick off (All fixtures are single games with the side written first playing at home)
Arsenal under-16s were also in action today, beating the same opponents 2-1 thanks to goals from wingers Jernade Meade and Samir Bihmoutine, with Charlie Mann impressing in goal.
