Arsenal agree deal for goalkeeper Sean McDermott
Arsenal have struck a deal to sign Norweigan goalkeeper Sean McDermott when he turns 16 in May. The stopper, who is currently playing for IK Var in his homeland, played for the Gunners as a trialist in the Atalanta Cup success at the back end of last season. He impressed during that tournament and seemed excited at the prospect of coming to England but wanted to finish his education in Norway first.
A deal has now been agreed and, provided things run smoothly Sean will sign for Arsenal as a scholar at the start of next season and be part of the under-18s squad.
Mc Dermott, who has Irish heritage, told Norweigan newspaper Fædrelandsvennen
The facilities, coaches and the environment at Arsenal is what made me want to go there. This is what I’ve always dreamed about
Sean’s advisor, Jim Solbakken is completely behind his client’s decision to join the Gunners
Arsenal have for the last ten years have shown that they are among the best to develop young players. If Sean as a 16-year-old ids deemed good enough for their academy, it will be a fantastic chance for him
Mc Dermott’s arrival looks set to spell the end of James Shea’s Arsenal career. The Islington-born ‘keeper’s scholarship expires in the summer and despite some good performances for the under-18s recently, his lack of height remains an issue. Charlie Mann, Daniel Bentley and Lee Chambers are three talented goalkeepers behind him, but they are all set to be pushed back in the pecking order once McDermott signs.
He will join up with his team-mates for training sessions this winter before sealing his move to the club in May.
