Loanees- Barazite sees penalty saved in controversial game, Traoré outshone by Kranjcar +Botelho update
Welcome to Loanees Update, bringing you the latest news on the young Gunners who have temporarily swapped the red and white of Arsenal for the colours of their adopted clubs. In this update catch up on the progress of Armand Traoré at Portsmouth, Nacer Barazite at Derby, Pedro Botelho at Salamanca, Kerrea Gilbert at Leicester and Vincent van den Berg at Zwolle.
Nacer Barazite- Derby County 1 Nottingham Forest 1
Nacer recovered from injury in time to play his part in a controversial encounter at Pride Park as Derby took on Nottingham Forest in the Championship. Barazite was named amongst the substitutes as the Rams looked to move into the top half of the table. It was a dissapointing first half with Derby just shading it performance-wise but it was anyone’s guess what the final score would be. Derby were dealt a blow when Rob Hulse was forced to withdraw on 29 minutes, but his replacement Emmanuel Villa would have a key role to play in the outcome of the game.
Nacer came on at half-time, replacing Gary Teale on the right-wing. This was the perfect opportunity for the Dutchman to work his way back into Paul Jewell’s plans. But Derby were soon behind. Lewis McGugan whipped in a corner from the right and the unfortunate Villa headed into his own net to make it 1-0 to Forest. Derby had to respond and respond they did.
Barazite was the victim of a couple of crunching challenges from Forest players who were struggling to deal with his eloquent skill. Nacer took most of the set-pieces for the Rams, creating an opportunity for Jordan Stewart who blazed his effort over the bar. On 66 minutes, Derby were level after Villa rose to convert Stewart’s angled free-kick and in doing so made up for his earlier own-goal. Game on.
Derby were determined to take all three points and brought on Nathan Ellington in search of a winner. But the real drama would come in the dying moments of the match. Derby had the ball in the net after Barazite’s free kick had been met by Villa and thought that they had won it but instead the referee awarded the Rams a penalty for an alleged handball by Forest’s Luke Chambers. Forest ‘keeper Lee Camp was cautioned for unsporting behaviour and then Barazite stepped up to take the penalty. A lot of pressure was on the youngster’s shoulders and he was devastated when he saw his spot-kick saved by Camp. Nacer then whipped in the resulting corner and Villa rose highest and scored. Just as he was running to celebrate, the referee then waved play on and Forest broke down the other end but couldn’t make anything of it. Paul Jewell was furious at the final whistle and rightly so, they had had two goals dissallowed. Barazite will feel dejected because of his penalty miss but that is part and parcel of football and can only make him more determined to suceed in the future.
Armand Traoré- Portsmouth 1 Wigan 2
Armand’s place in the Portsmouth starting line-up is under renewed threat from Nico Kranjcar after the Croatian winger came off the bench to score in Pompey’s 2-1 defeat to Wigan at Fratton Park yesterday. Arsenal legend Tony Adams kept faith with Traoré on the left-wing for his first home match in charge but after an ineffective first half, the Frenchman was withdrawn at the break and replaced by Kranjcar. Pompey had suffered a blow just before the interval after Papa Bouba Diop brought down Titus Bramble in the area and a penalty was awarded. The in-form Egyptian Amr Zaki stepped up to take it and beat James to make it 1-0. A frustrated Traoré watched on from the subs bench as Kranjcar pulled Pompey level eight minutes from time by hitting a powerful effort through the legs of the helpless Chris Kirkland. It looked as if the hosts had salvaged a point, but Wigan snatched the win in the second minute of stoppage time when Emile Heskey latched onto Cattermole’s through ball and slid it past James for his 100th league goal.
Pedro Botelho- Celta Vigo 2 Salamanca 0
After Havard Nordtveit’s departure from the club, Pedro Botelho is now the only Arsenal loanee at Spanish link-club Salamanca. He found himself on the bench once again for today’s trip to Celta Vigo. The hosts took the lead through Dinei on 17 minutes and although they had Lago sent off in the second-half they prevailed and secured the win in stoppage time thanks to a Trashorras strike.
Kerrea Gilbert- Leicester 2 Bristol Rovers 1
Kerrea missed out again through injury as Leicester came from a goal down to beat Bristol Rovers in League One. Jo Osei-Kuffour, who won the FA Youth Cup for Arsenal as a teenager, put the visitors ahead on 61 minutes but Matty Fryatt struck twice late on to win it for the Foxes who are up to fifth in the table.
Vincent van den Berg- Haarlem 3 Zwolle 1
Vincent is still waiting for his Zwolle debut after injury deprived him of the chance to feature in this weekend’s encounter with Haarlem. Zwolle took the lead through Guarino but the hosts hit three second-half goals to snatch the points.

Little thing – Forest keeper was Lee Camp, not Carlo Nash.
