UEFA Under-17 qualifiers- Wilshere hits post as England draw, Özyakup’s Holland held

Emmanuel Frimpong, Luke Freeman, Jack Wilshere- England U17 0 Armenia U17 0

Arsenal had three representatives in the England under-17s side which drew their opening qualifying game with Armenia last night. Emmanuel Frimpong, Luke Freeman and Jack Wilshere all started the game but couldn’t do enough to break down a stern Armenian defence in Tenerife. The Three Lions dominated the game and had the lion’s share of possession with the lively Wilshere striking the post from a free-kick shortly after half-time. Charlton’s Jonjo Shelvey was also denied by the woodwork and coach John Peacock admitted, “It was a very frustrating night and disappointing in the end”. Wilshere and Frimpong played the entire game whilst Freeman was replaced by Billy Knott on 54 minutes. England’s next game is against Estonia tomorrow before their final qualifier versus Spain on Monday. England currently sit second with Spain topping the group after their 6-0 thrashing of Estonia.

Oguzhan Özyakup- Netherlands U17 0 Cyprus U17 0

Fresh from making his debut for Arsenal under-18s in the 3-2 win over Norwich on Saturday, international football was on the agenda for summer recruit Oguzhan Özyakup this afternoon as Netherlands U17s took on Cyprus U17s in their opening Group 12 qualifier. Oguzhan played the whole 90 minutes but even his creative influence couldn’t urge the Dutch onto victory and the match ended in a 0-0 draw. Holland take on Latvia on Saturday in their next fixture and then play Italy next Tuesday in their final game. The Netherlands are currently third, level on points with Cyprus with Italy leading the way following their 3-1 win over Latvia.

what do you think of charltons Jonjo Shelvey?
Been trying to follow him the last years… (I favour Charlton behind arsenal;))

  2. He is good at holding the ball up and winning aerial battles but it would be interesting to see whether he would get a chance if he moved to a bigger club.

Shelvey should stay where he is. Would be damaging to him if he moved now, like Bostock did. Pardew has already played him a few times and will probably do more this year, as he speaks highly of him.

That aside. I was really dissapointed this team could not break down Armenia. There is a lot of talent in that team and I was shocked that we could not even score. It would be devestating if we could not beat Estonia. I don’t think they are a physical team like Armenia, so it should be a bit better.
