Charlie Mann looking to put pressure on James Shea

James Shea is firmly instated as the no.1 goalkeeper for the under-18s at the moment, but despite some impressive performances of late he is yet to keep a clean sheet this season.

Whilst Shea was in action against Wolves last weekend, under-16s ‘keeper Charlie Mann was performing heroics out in Cannes at the Zinedine Zidane Tournament. A penalty save from Mann enabled Emmanuel Frimpong the chance to put the Gunners in the final and they eventually went on to win the competition.

This is Shea’s final season in which he is eligible for the u-18s and Mann looks like being his natural successor next season. However, if he continues to impress then Bould may consider giving Charlie a chance earlier. Shea is not used to playing games on a regular basis and can get tired easily although he has made some superb stops lately.

It promises to be an interesting battle because if Shea picks up an injury or suspended for just one game, then Mann is poised to take his place. It’s good for the club that there is competition especially if you look further down the ranks then you will discover the likes of Daniel Bentley who is another talented goalkeeper.

It’s now up to Shea to prove he’s good enough to play all season, starting with Bristol City on Saturday.
