After almost three years of waiting, Mexican forward Carlos Vela finally made his debut in an Arsenal shirt last night as the Gunners were held to a 1-1 draw in Hungary by Szombathelyi. Arsene Wenger analysed Vela’s performance after the game, saying
It was his first game and I felt around the box he was very intelligent, very clever and technically good. Overall he was quite good. Physically he needs to work, but I’m happy.
He played some good passes but should have scored in the first half. It doesn’t really matter though and you will start to see the best of him later on in pre-season, most probably in the Emirates Cup. He was quite tired when he came off but that can be expected. One interesting thing for me though, is where he will play next season. He started yesterday up-front alongside Nicklas Bendtner but maybe he will be more effective out on the left where he can create chances for his team-mates rather than being constantly involved in the thick of the action. There is a lot more to come from Carlos Vela and the chances are that he will start performing sooner rather than later.
