Coquelin impresses as Arsenal are held by Szombathelyi
Match report- Szombathelyi 1 Arsenal 1
Summer acquisition Francis Coquelin was one of the stand-out performers as Arsenal were held to a 1-1 draw by Szombathelyi Haladas in Hungary this evening.
After impressing against Barnet on Saturday, Arsene Wenger handed a start to Jack Wilshere, whilst Carlos Vela made his debut alongside Nicklas Bendtner up front. Gavin Hoyte partnered his brother Justin at centre-back.

Denilson had the first effort of the game, striking the ball against the bar just six minutes in after some good work from Bendtner, who was out to impress after his poor display against Barnet. Walcott had another chance but failed to make the most of his opportunity.
The hosts, meanwhile, caught Arsenal by suprise playing some neat one-twos before Kensesei smashed a shot towards goal. With Almunia stranded, Gavin Hoyte made a last ditch attempt to clear the ball off the line but failed to do so and the referee gave a goal. Arsenal were behind and Arsene Wenger wasn’t happy.
Wilshere had found the physical aspect of the game hard to cope with, but he was still out to impress and displayed his now familiar range of technical ability and vision. He also volleyed an effort just over the bar after good work again from Bendtner.
Nicklas then controlled the ball expertly and found Walcott who showed good composure to finish via the post. Arsenal had levelled just before the break and in truth they just about deserved it.
Vela played some good passes but, like Wilshere, found it hard to cope with the physical side of the game. He was lacking match fitness but by the time the Emirates Cup rolls around he will no doubt be on form.
At half-time Wenger made four changes with Randall, Lansbury, Traore and Mannone replacing Ramsey, Vela, G.Hoyte and Almunia. The new-look team looked like this.
———————-Mannone——————-
–J.Hoyte—–Sagna—————-Clichy——Traore
–Lansbury—Denilson————-Randall——Wilshere
————Walcott————–Bendtner———–
The second half offered little in terms of goalscoring opportunities, but it did say a lot about certain players. Lansbury, as you would expect, looked rusty but still showed flashes of brilliance whilst Randall did well to break the play up but often made the wrong decision by opting to shoot rather than pass.
Wenger then used his two remaining substitutes bringing on Simpson and Coquelin for Bendtner and Wilshere.

Arsenal struggled to get going as the young side looked to feel their way into the game and they weren’t helped by numerous substitutions which kept on halting the game.
Coquelin, though, was a stand-out player for me. He broke up play expertly when nobody else seemed bothered and showed good determination. His shots at goal weren’t the best but he definitely has potential.
Simpson was one of the players with a point to prove and did little to enhance his reputation. He made some good runs without his team-mates obliging and he had a shot blocked late on after good work from Coquelin. It’s doubtful that he will get many more chances like this to impress Wenger and after Bendtner’s much-improved display his Arsenal days seem numbered. He did well against Barnet and it could be argued that he didn’t get enough time tonight but we will have to wait and see what happens with him.
Some positives and negatives to be taken out of this game then. The Hoyte brothers looked suspect at centre-back, we conceded the first goal again and we failed to create many chances in the second half. However, the emergence of Coquelin and the continual development of Wilshere can be looked upon fondly.
The players will now head back to Austria before taking on Burgenland on Monday night. Youngsters such as Havard Nordtveit and Nacer Barazite, who have travelled with the squad but didn’t play tonight, will be eager to impress whilst the game could also signal a debut for Samir Nasri and a return for some of the more established first-team players.

I think you’ve been a bit unfair on Simpson. He was not on the pitch for long and was playing as a lone front man. He made some very good runs and it’s not his fault that his team mates failed to find him – Walcott and Randall both could have put him in with chances on goal if they had spotted his runs the way Wilshere did on Saturday.
One player you failed to comment on much was Denilson, I thought he made Gilberto look like Linford Christie he was so relaxed. Often prone to giving up when he loses possession and loves the ball to much to play our quick passing game. I think he’s just too Brazilian for the Premiership and for our style, and certainly in no way could he be a replacement for the all action Flamini. Coquelin has done more in two games to suggest he could fill that gap than Denilson has done in several years. Ramsey didn’t shine for me today the way that Coquelin did.
Wenger will decide what he likes. To most of us Adebayor looked like Akinbiyi but Wenger gave him game after game and eventually he looked semi decent. So we can guess of course, but the master knows. What Simpson has on his side is the physique.
how anyone can decide Denilson is “in no way could be a replacement for the all action Flamini” following ONE preseason friendly is beyond me.
with fans like that, who needs scouts.
Very congested game. I wasn’t impressed much, but they showed sharpness than on saturday. Vela needs to get ready. Walcott should too. In all, they looked good, but lack-luster is the problem. Hope to have the big guns back. Nasri, Toure and co.

Not bad for a team that won’t even turn up for the joke cup this season. I’m sure all of them will turn up at some point but not together.
It’s going to be a mad season, Manure so think they’ve got it in the bag already that I think it’s going to be between us and Chelski……no matter what!
Simpson was not on long and was isolated – I thought he made a good effort actually. Coquelin stood out as you say. Wishere, Walcott, Sagna, clichy, Ramsey and Bendtner all had good games. the others were either quiet or poor. I hope wilshere, Ramsey and Coqeulin get another game on Monday. I want to see Vela used on the wing as well to see what his best position is and its going to be superb to see Nasri in action on Monday.
I dont think you ca judge any players in these games. Not only are they just 75% fit but they are in the middle of pre season training.
Let the players find there fitness/sharpness then start judging them.
By the start of the Emirates cup they will have had a few weeks training and im sure will be looking in tip top condition.
Yeah seb your comments need a rethink
a— “I think he’s just too Brazilian”
Too Brazilian? Was Gilberto not Brazilian enough ? And what about Kaka – is he very Brazilian, quite Brazilian, or in no way Brazilian at all?
b— “and certainly in no way could [Denilson] be a replacement for the all action Flamini”, who is suggesting that? nobody. Regardless of his quality, or lack thereof, Denilson is a totally different kind of player.
before anyone reads this, can I say I am not an Arsenal hater, I am one of Wenger’s biggest fans, and I will be surprised if he does use Denilson as the first choice mid next to Cesc.
Gilberto was not very ‘Brazilian’ because he was a fighter and he would often just give the ball to another player having done his job rather than staying on the ball for a while. Plus Gil was a DM in a counter attack team, in the last two seasons he didn’t really suit our free-flowing style. Denilson seems to like to retain possession a little more and when he loses it he seems to stop trying, he doesn’t tackle back.
People are touting Denilson for the spot next to Cesc, well on the basis of the many times I have seen Denilson play, I don’t believe his style suits the way we played last year and I don’t believe his style would compliment Cesc. I’m not saying he is a bad player, I’m saying he is not an explosive box-to-box player in the Flamini mould, and I’m pretty sure if he does get the nod, people will be moaning about him. Of course I’m not basing this entirely on today’s game, it’s based on the kind of player he has always been for us. Why do you think he has played wing so much when he has been brought on? How did Coquelin manage to put in a performance to put him to shame – it’s only pre-season isn’t it?
I like Denilson, he is a classy midfielder, but on the story so far I can only see him as a substitute for Cesc or a Gilberto-style Dm in a 4-5-1, not a rampaging Dm in a 4-4-2.
I watched the game live, here are my thoughts on the players with ratings:
Almunia – solid enough when he needed to be, couldn’t do much about the goal as the defense was caught out. 7
Clichy – did great as captain, more of the same from last season, lots of good energy and determination with a few strong runs into the attacking third; could maybe improve his delivery and/or final decision making slightly, but a bit too early to judge. Looked surprisingly comfortable at centre-half too! 7.5
Justin Hoyte – didn’t look too comfortable at centre-back, clearly not his best position, but he wasn’t helped by his brother. He looked more comfortable in the 2nd half when he was switched to right back. IMHO he could really use a loan spell with a mid-table premier league club, and if he isn’t good enough after that should be sold. 6
Gavin Hoyte – didn’t look too comfortable, but it must be kept in mind that he is very young; Wenger himself said that centre-backs come into their prime at around 28, judging from that, he has quite some time to go, and could yet prove good in the future. 5
Sagna – I personally think he was one of the best players on the pitch, always comfortable in possession, great positioning and tackling, and supported the attacks very well. Looked very comfortable at centre-back as well. 8.5
Wilshere – Looked a class above everyone else on the field, which is amazing considering he was atleast 3 years younger than everyone else. Incredible ball control, silky running, great passing…he really has all the makings to become an absolute legend in the future. He just needs to get some experience in the reserves/carling cup/on loan in the next 2 or 3 seasons and what a player we will have on our hands! 8
Denilson – Much improved performance from Barnet. He looked solid in possession and teamed up reasonable well with Ramsey. Got better as the game wore on, before he probably became too exhausted and anonymous for the last minutes on the pitch 7.5
Ramsey – Solid partnership with Denilson, didn’t quite hit the heights he did against Barnet but he does have fantastic awareness and a magnificent passing range. 7.5
Walcott – Very lively, getting into the groove of things; much better performance than Barnet, and an exceptionally well-taken and instinctive goal. Expect big things from him this season. 8
Bentdner – A million miles improved from his Barnet performance, made some strong runs into the channels, his ball control was coming back, some decent crosses. Exceptionally good control for the assist to Walcott. 7.5
Vela – Has only been training for a very short time with the rest of the squad and that showed at times early on as he was on a different wavelength, but you could tell the kind of class he has and what kind of player he can become. Great ball control, has a great turn of pace and will be interesting to see how he does over the rest of the preseason. 7
SUBS:
Mannone – didn’t have much to do, but what he did do he did comfortably. 7
Mark Randall – played in the centre of the park. Has this aura around him that makes it seem like he’s not really trying too hard and everything looks really easy for him. It may be a little bit of arrogance but I think its just his style. He looks like he may have a great passing range and shot when he’s fully fit – bu the did look very rusty (completely understandable as its his first game back). He did have a lot of the ball but most of his passes and shots were overhit. It would be interesting to see how he does over the rest of preseason. 6
Henri Lansbury – Was quite anonymous and didn’t have much of the ball. When he did have it, didn’t do much of note. Clearly not in the swing of things yet. 5.5
Armand Traore – Not as good as clichy was in the first half at full back, but solid enough at the back, and did try and get forward when he could, though the delivery sometimes could have been better. Not a bad outing overall though. 7
Francis Coquelin – As has been mentioned, made a difference when he came on. His anticipation of the ball and tackling are fantastic, he’s clearly a natural at it. His attitude also seems great. His ball control, passing and shooting have room for improvement, but I’m sure that will come over time in training with us. Will be knocking on the door hard in around 2 seasons. 8
Jay Simpson – Unfortunately didn’t get much service at all, because when he came on the midfield were struggling to get back a foothold in the game. He did make some intelligent runs and put in some great effort, but wasn’t his day. 7
i would have prefered if you just gave a summary about the game and left out the how didnt impress bits or who didnt make this or that. The idea of preseason is to prepare and focus on the season ahead. A place for practce and trying out ideas.
Flamini a “box-to-box player”? You mean the same Flamini who, like Song, many of you felt would never be good enough as a midfielder to make it at Arsenal around this time last year? Now you are sure Denilson is not the player to partner Cesc? Thank goodness it is only Wenger who gets to make these decisions.
How is anybody supposed to read this article without going through serious eye contortions. It’s just ridiculous to print a very faint white on a pitch black background. It’s even harder to read than some of the blogs which insist on having a dark maroon background.White background only please bloggers.
