Loan watch: Defeats for Simpson and Gibbs

SATURDAY’S MATCHES

Kieran Gibbs- Norwich City 1 West Brom 2

Kieran started the game for Norwich against promotion-chasing West Brom at Carrow Road this afternoon and the Canaries went into the match knowing there was still a slight possibility of them falling into the relegation dogfight. They made the worst possible start when, after just two minutes, Roben Koren struck for the visitors to put West Brom a goal up. Norwich failed to respond before the break and went into the half-time interval knowing they had work to do. However, they failed to find the net and went even further behind when the in-form Zoltan Gera notched on 71 minutes. Ched Evans converted a penalty two minutes later to keep the hosts in it, but the Baggies held on. Kieran was withdrawn after 74 minutes and replaced by Luke Chadwick. The result leaves Norwich in 18th place, three points above the drop zone with two games to play.

Jay Simpson- Millwall 0 Leeds 2

Jay started for the Lions as they took on Leeds at the Den. With Leeds pushing for a play-off place and Millwall still lurking around the relegation zone, it promised to be an enticing encounter. However, the first half was a rather physical encounter and both teams went into the break all square. Simpson had a couple of efforts but they were long range shots and straight at the goalkeeper. In the second half, Leeds started the brightest and their perserverance paid off when David Prutton struck on 70 minutes. It was followed up by a Andy Hughes strike nine minutes later to rub the salt into Millwall’s wounds. The Lions are four points above the drop zone with just two games remaining.

Mark Randall- Southampton 0 Burnley 1

Mark was left out of Burnley’s matchday squad for the trip to Southampton. Burnley won the game thanks to a Steven Caldwell strike on 48 minutes.

Arsenal under-18s 1 Fulham 1

Tom Cruise was on target

Arsenal under-18s drew 1-1 with Fulham this morning in their final group fixture before the play-offs. In a tight, scrappy encounter the Gunners could count on centre-back Thomas Cruise to prod home from close range in order to earn them a share of the spoils. It was Cruise’s third goal for the under-18s this season and Arsenal go in to next week’s play-off semi-final with Aston Villa knowing that they will be up against a tough side.

Mannone named on bench for Reading game

Young Arsenal ‘keeper Vito Mannone has been named on the bench for this afternoon’s Premier League clash with Reading at Emirates Stadium. Jens Lehmann starts in goal, but after Manuel Almunia and Lukasz Fabianski were forced to pull out, Vito will be on the bench. It is a just reward for Mannone who has been in sensational form for the reserves this season and could be included in the first team squad next campaign.
