If you follow Arsenal, then you’ve probably heard of David Rocastle. The midfielder spent two years as an apprentice at Highbury, before going on to make 218 first-team appearances, scoring 24 goals. What you may not realise, however, is the fact that today is seven years since his death and has been designated David Rocastle day.
David also made fourteen appearances for England and went on to play for Leeds, Man.City and Chelsea amongst others before ending his career in 1999. Just two years later he died at the age of 31.
This loss was very hard for Arsenal fans to accept, he epitomised everything good about the club, the way Arsenal is supposed to be. He was a terrific role-model and Arsenal’s youngsters of today can learn a lot from him.
The website www.rocky7.co.uk has been set up for fans to pledge their messages of support to Rocky and to offer donations. I would oblige you to visit it, seeing as today marks seven years since his death.
The fact that he started his career at Arsenal and worked his way up to become one of the most important figures in the club’s history says a lot about his personality.
There will be more news on Arsenal’s youngsters throughout the week, with a crucial game coming up against MK Dons on Saturday. Henri Lansbury (glandular fever) is back in training but may not be risked, whilst Luke Ayling foot is doubtful. More on that to come, and it appears that an Arsenal XI comprising of mainly reserve and youth players will take on Dorchester in a friendly, in early May.
In the mean-time you can pay your respects to Rocky in the comments section below and your messages of support will be passed on.
Thanks for reading.
