THE MATCH

Jay played 90 minutes as Millwall were held to a goalless draw at home to Luton in League One. Jay started on the right side of midfield, with former Gunner Ryan Smith on the left. Smith was replaced by David Martin just before the hour mark. Former Sunderland player Don Hutchinson came close for the visitors early on but Evans easily saved it. Jay seemed isolated on the right and took his frustration out on Hutchinson just before half-time when he gave away a foul. In the second half, Jay hit a speculative effort from 35 yards which flew wide of the post, before fouling Hutchinson again and this time he was lucky not to go into the book. Millwall were now creating chances and Danny Senda’s long throws were causing problems for the opposition. Brkovic had easily the best opportunity of the game twelve minutes from time, but he hit the bar from around 12 yards out. The Lions were again rueing missed opportunities eight minutes later when in-form striker Bas Savage bustled into a congested penalty area and hit a shot over the bar from 6 yards. Millwall were piling on the pressure at this point and Luton’s Richard Jackson had to be alert to clear away a David Martin corner. Millwall were getting more and more desperate and Ali Fuseni smashed a wild effort well wide from 35 yards. After four minutes of injury time, referee Tony Bates blew the whistle on what was Millwall’s second successive draw. It was a performance which deserved much more.

Despite gaining a point, Millwall slipped to 19th place in the table and now have 45 points with six games still to play. The Lions are being dragged into the relegation dogfight.
