Is Jay Simpson’s Arsenal career over?
Jay Simpson has spent much of this season on loan at Millwall, and has featured prominently in their bid to avoid the drop. He has performed admirably both on the right flank and up front this season, and has picked up several accolades along the way. But with so many quality players up front for Arsenal (plus the returning Carlos Vela), he will find it difficult to get regular games for us and may have to leave the club in the summer.
I was impressed with his form last season, especially in the FA Youth Cup run. He scored a hat-trick against Cardiff at Emirates in the Quarter-final and it was at that moment that I thought he would have a great chance of making it at Arsenal. Now though I’m not so sure. As well as the likes of van Persie, Bendtner and Adebayor we have Vela as I have mentioned and then look a little further down the line and you will notice players like Nacer Barazite, Gilles Sunu, Rhys Murphy and Luke Freeman, all of whom have great potential. Would he make it as a right-winger? Maybe, but I don’t think Arséne Wenger would be inclined to play him there as he would much prefer to play someone like Hleb instead.
So, Jay has a decision to make. Stay at Arsenal and bide his time where he is unlikely to get many first-team opportunities or stay at a club like Millwall where he would play every week, albeit at a lower level.
